July 2007 Selection of the Month
T.Styles did an excellent job depicting the life of a dark skin female caught up in the hoopla about dark skin being ugly. The main character, Parade, had always been told she was black and ugly and it affected her self esteem, but ultimately she had the last laugh in the end. Great read from the beginning to the end. But the author was a no show at our meeting with no explanation, which left our members a little uneasy with her......

A Piece of Cake by Cupcake Brown
The book for August was a Piece of Cake by Cupcake Brown, and yes that is her real name. This was an autobiography of her life growing up after her mother passes away. She experiences more drama than any average individual experiences and all starting at the age of only 11 years old. She is introduced to drugs, sex, and violence and such a young age that it causes her to grow up too so.....

Lawrence Graham's "Our Kind of People" reads like a proudly written "who's who" of upper class African Americans. The book serves as an insider's guide, including very specific details regarding particular families, organizations, vacation destinations and universities that elite African Americans hold in high esteem from city to city. The book sparked discussion in our book club about the ways that we divide ourselves based on skin complexion, education, salary, and "class" and included diverge.....
